Jam Hand Pies

bursting with filling

Hand pies are for crust lovers. If you enjoy the flaky, buttery crust of a pie more than the filling, then hand pies are for you.

They're also conveniently portable. Have you tried lugging a pie dish on public transportation, dodging people on the sidewalk so you can bring a pie to work to share with co-workers? It's not fun. Hand pies can easily fit into a container and thrown into a bag without worrying about spillage.

And if you're into the cute factor, they're tiny and bite-sized.

Mini Apple Pies

Another autumn, another apple recipe. Though no complaints on my part.

Rather than making the usual 9-inch pie, I attempted mini pies to maximize shareability. Also, they're just so much cuter.

Lattice tops on the mini pies are more difficult to handle because the dough tends to warm up and soften more easily. To combat this issue, I used heart-shaped cookie cutters to make the pie tops instead.

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

I've been dreaming of strawberry rhubarb pie for months.

It got to the point where I could no longer wait for strawberry season and I broke down and purchased a pie to satisfy that craving. It turned out to be disappointing not because it was store bought, but because it was a cherry pie even though I was told otherwise. The horror.

Another problem with store bought pies is they tend to be overly sweet. Alas, I impatiently waited for strawberry season to arrive, rounded up some friends to go picking, and turned all that hard work into preserves and pie.
